One of highlights to the Cretan terrain is its gorges and caves. The most famous and biggest is the Gorge of Samaria in the Prefecture of Chania. Although a mountainous island, the flat areas produce a high yield of agricultural produce. This is due to its fertile soil and favourable climate. Its produce includes olives, grapes, citrus fruits, aromatic and pharmaceutical plants, garden produce, bananas, avocados and kiwis. It has thick forest of pine, cypress, fir, chestnut, oak and plane trees with a large selection of wild flowers and aromatic plants. At Vai on the outskirts of Sitia is the famous palm forest with the unique, rare species of palm tree, the Phoenix Theophrastii. Fishing is also an important commodity on Crete, with stock breeding a key part of this fragile industry. Mainly sheep and goats are bred and cheese products stand out for their excellent quality and taste. Administratively Crete is divided into four prefectures, Heraklion with Heraklion as its capital, Lassithi with Agios Nikolaos as its capital, Rethymnon with Rethymnon as its capital and Chania, with Chania as the capital. |
