Sitia: The largest Unspoiled town in Crete.Built in the form of an amphitheater on the Eastern side of Crete in the prefecture (county) Lasithi. This truly traditional town has seen its fair share of investment in the recent years but still retains its rural charm. This is what makes Sitia so magical and distinct from other towns. Even in this over cautions world, parents still feel content with leaving their children to play in the town. This is in part due to the low crime rate but also the family atmosphere that exists in Sitia. Sitia is a working town twelve months a year and has a lot more to offer than just an ideal holiday spot. It is a perfect place to set up home, whether you are bringing family or just on your own, anyone will feel immediately at home here.At the top of the town there is a newly built airport which at present has chartered flights coming from Athens and other major Greek cities. This is due to be updated to fully international status with completion set at the early part of 2010. Therefore the transfer time to popular destinations on the eastern side of Crete, will be considerably less. This wonderful town has a long white sand beach which has been offered the blue flag for it cleanliness and environmental importance (details can be seen here). The town also benefits from a large marina. This is perfect for boating types, because everything is accessible from just a short walk. There are also many shops, banks, schools, supermarkets and general amenities to suit tourists and permanent residents alike. The life in Sitia is divided in to two times of year; the annual olive harvest and the Hot summer. In the winter most of the Greeks spend there time in the traditional way, helping there families harvest the olive crop. In the winter, however, the town of Sitia becomes a haven for tourists from all over Greece and Europe, taking advantage of the perfect summer weather and clean beaches. This influx of people also increases the ammount of entertainment facilities on offer, when many bars and cafe's open for the summer season. Sitia is also a great access point to the many local tourist locations, this includes the beach at Vai. This almost tropical location is situated a mere 25 minute drive from the center of Sitia and is almost paradise. Also near Sitia is the popular attraction of Agios Nikolaos, this is famous for its 'natural' blue lagoon and marina. This is one of many picture postcard scenes available on the East side of Crete. Whether you are thinking of buying a home or just for a holiday Sitia is always worth a visit. |
